Monsoon 2025 Arrives with Intensity; Tourists Urged to Exercise Caution

The picturesque hill station of Ooty, a top monsoon getaway in South India, has temporarily closed all major tourist attractions due to persistent and heavy rainfall brought on by the early onset of the 2025 southwest monsoon.

Authorities have ordered the closure of popular sites including the Government Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta Peak, Rose Garden, Pykara Lake, and Avalanche Eco-Tourism Zone, citing public safety concerns. Incidents of waterlogging, minor landslides, and fallen trees have been reported in various parts of the Nilgiris district.

“We’ve seen intense rainfall over the past few days, and more is expected. Tourist safety remains our top priority. Attractions will reopen once weather conditions improve,” a Nilgiris district official stated.

Torrential Start to the Season

Although the monsoon typically begins in early June, this year’s rains arrived with unexpected force by late May. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the Nilgiris, forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the next 72 hours.

While road access to Ooty remains open, local officials have advised travelers to avoid unnecessary trips, especially along ghat roads at night, due to slippery conditions and low visibility from dense fog.

Tourists Caught Off Guard

Tourists already in Ooty have been urged to stay indoors and avoid outdoor excursions, particularly in forested or hilly areas. In response, local hotels and resorts are offering indoor activities, including tea-tasting sessions, traditional Nilgiri folk performances, and cooking demonstrations to keep guests entertained during the weather-related shutdown.

“We came hoping to explore the views and waterfalls, but the rain has kept us indoors,” said Priya Ganesan, a tourist from Chennai. “Thankfully, the atmosphere here is still beautiful—just in a quieter, misty kind of way.”

When Will Tourist Spots Reopen?

As of now, no official reopening date has been confirmed. However, authorities suggest that some attractions may resume operations in phases once the rain subsides and clean-up operations are completed.
