Coast Guard arrests 6 Lankan fishermen

A Sri Lankan fishing boat with six crew members was detained by the Indian Coast Guard on the Indian side of the International Maritime Boundary Line.

Sources said the fishermen were identified as T R Madushan, 34, P W Amila Maduranga, 28, M G Sugith Bandara, 29, G K Ushan Madushanka, 19, and M M Baddika, 28, all from Trincomalee and Thusil Makela, 22, from Priyantha Liyanage.

The personnel from the Indian Coast Guard Ship that was on patrol on 2 May noticed the mechanised boat on the Indian waters near IMBL Kodiyakarai off Nagapattinam district.

This was a violation of the Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981, said a press release issued by the Coast Guard Region (East).

The Coast Guard personnel confiscated the trawler, secured all the six fishermen and brought them to Nagapattinam. THey were handed over to the Marine Police for further investigation.
